The Gukurahundi genocide refers to the systematic massacre of over twenty thousand Ndebele people in Zimbabwe from 1983 to 1987, orchestrated by the Fifth Brigade of the Zimbabwean army. This unit, trained in North Korea, operated outside the regular military chain of command and reported directly to Prime Minister Robert Mugabe. [...] Mugabe deployed the Fifth Brigade to eliminate perceived ZAPU threats, resulting in widespread atrocities against the Ndebele community. The operations included public executions, forced disappearances, and the establishment of re-education camps, often targeting civilians regardless of their political affiliations.
